Finding the Best Skincare Routine After 40

I’m often asked “What is the best skincare routine if I’m over 40”, “What is the best skincare routine if I’m over 50”, “...over 60” - you get the idea.  The answer is actually quite simple.  The best routine is one that has products specially formulated for mature skin and one that you will stick to regularly.

Menopausal Skin Changes

According to research, estrogen levels decline drastically before, during and after menopause until they get to nearly zero. This causes many physiological changes to occur, from hot flashes to brain fog. Hormone-related changes to the skin include:

  • sagging and loss of collagen
  • wrinkles and fine lines
  • excessive dryness and moisture loss
  • loss of radiance or skin brightness
  • breakouts and blemishes, particularly in the u-zone
  • increase in facial hair
  • slower bruise/wound healing
  • impaired/damaged skin barrier

These are in addition to other lifestyle changes from stress to sunscreen use that could result in an increase in hyperpigmentation, age spots, and breakouts.

Less Is More When It Comes to Skincare

Dermatologists and beauty editors alike agree that skinimalism is the way to go with skincare. Highly curated arsenals that are efficient at delivering the results you need.

When I launched Pause® back in 2019, my vision was to keep things simple – not too many products, just the right products to keep my skin hydrated, healthy and firm. Having been in the industry for many years, I knew the most effective skincare routines were all about cleansing, moisturizing and tightening/toning. Maintaining skin’s moisture levels is the #1 priority when dealing with aging skin.  The second priority (for me) was to help the body build back collagen and elastin fibers to help skin look and feel tighter, firmer and more toned. We lose 1% of collagen a year starting in our 20s, which is the main reason you see skin sagging and developing fine lines and wrinkles. This is why every product contains the Pause Complex, designed to help the body boost collagen production. After that, it’s just a matter of any unique skin needs you may have that would require additional products.

My Daily Skincare Routine as a Fiftypreneur

As a woman in her 50s, my typical skincare routine consists of the Pause Hydrating Cleanser to cleanse away any dirt, dead skin cells or oils that accumulate overnight or throughout the day, followed by the Pause Collagen Boosting Moisturizer and 5 minutes using the Pause Fascia Stimulating Tool. I don’t generally wear much makeup (if at all) and I’m not currently experiencing any breakouts so I am able to stick to this very simple routine.  I use the Hydrating Cleanser and Collagen Boosting Moisturizer both morning and night, but only need to use the Fascia Tool once a day for 5 minutes.

How to Customize Your Skincare Routine

Adding to Your Skincare Routine

Many people actually prefer more steps to their ritual because it’s an excellent time for self-care and focus.  In this case, we would need to know just a bit more about your ultimate goals or pain points.  In other words, is dry skin the bane of your existence? Add Moisture-Lock Ultra Hydrator over your moisturizer. Do dark circles and eye bags that look like they can hold groceries drive you crazy? Add the Eye Renewal Treatment to your routine. Do you often wear makeup? Our Micellar 4-in-1 Cleansing Treatment removes even the most stubborn make-up without stripping or over-drying skin, no water needed. Let’s go into a bit more detail.

Extra Hydration

Estrogen helps skin produce oil and hold onto water, so when it decreases skin gets much more prone to dryness. For typical menopause induced extreme dry skin, I recommend a skincare routine focused on extra hydration. Choose a gentle, hydrating cleanser and Collagen Boosting Moisturizer, but then add the Pause Moisture Lock Ultra Hydrator to lock in hydration. This last step provides healing and soothing magic thanks to its polyglutamic acid and ceramides – key ingredients in this luxurious formulation.

Eye Bags, Dark Circles and Puffiness

Dark circles and eye bags can definitely be frustrating. These issues have many causes such as dehydration, lack of sleep, contact dermatitis that can cause blood vessels under your eyes to dilate and show through the skin, excessive sun exposure resulting in hyperpigmentation, genetics and lifestyle factors.  The Pause Eye Renewal Treatment and its star ingredients of Caffeine, Ginkgo Biloba, vitamin C and peptides were designed to address a majority of these causes by boosting microcirculation, reducing and draining excess fluid, brightening dark circles, reducing under eye puffiness and hydrating the very thin skin around the eye area. Another excellent pro tip is to keep your Fascia Stimulating Tool in the refrigerator.  When ready to use, pull it out of the fridge and rest the rounded edge just under the eye for immediate depuffing and calming.

Midlife Breakouts

How about perimenopausal breakouts? Midlife breakouts have plagued me terribly from my 40s into today. I literally created the Pause Detox Serum for my personal use. As we get older, traditional breakout control products that include benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid are too harsh and drying for more experienced (mature) skin that is likely to have skin barrier damage just from living life.  The Pause Detox Serum decongests pores, removes dead skin cells and prevents skin congestion, and is gentle and hydrating enough to be used 2 times a day.  It can also be used as a spot treatment.

And lastly, if you still love wearing and experimenting with makeup, our 4-in-1 Micellar Water is a wonderful alternative to harsh wipes. It is a cleanser, toner, make-up remover and a treatment product in one, and is super effective at removing makeup and skin impurities without stripping the skin of any precious natural moisture.  The micellar molecule consists of tiny balls of cleansing oil molecules suspended in water to attract impurities resulting in skin that is cleansed, toned and hydrated.   You want to be sure to use a cotton round with this product, and press lightly to activate the micelles so they can work their magic.
