Pause Well-Aging | 5 TIPS FOR HEALTHIER WINTER SKIN OVER 40

By Rochelle Weitzner | September 26, 2022

I don’t know about you, but I always find the winter months to be a challenge when it comes to keeping my skin healthy. Between the cold weather, harsh winds, and dry indoor heat my skin can get dry and irritated so easily. But luckily, as the founder of a skincare brand, I’m constantly discovering tips and tricks that keep my skin in great shape all year long which I’m excited to share with you!

So, if you’re looking for some tips on how to winterize your skin to keep it healthy and glowing right through the holidays, here are my five favorites!

  1. Hot Hydration Tip:  we all know one of the best things you can do for your skin this winter (and year-round for that matter) is to make sure that you’re drinking plenty of water - at least eight 8oz glasses a day. It’s important to stay hydrated all year round, but especially in the winter when the air is dry, which saps moisture from - and dehydrates - skin. I personally find drinking water to be a boring challenge.  I know I need to do it, but I just really don’t like it.  So, I bought myself a 2-liter carafe that I fill with hot water, which I drink throughout the day.  For some reason the hot water tricks me into thinking I’m drinking something much more decadent. In either case, make sure to drink lots of water and avoid beverages that can dehydrate you, like coffee and alcohol.

  2. Hydrating Facial Cleansers: Cleansing is always a critically important step towards maintaining skin health, but in the winter finding a gentle, hydrating cleanser that won’t strip the skin of its natural oils is essential.  The Pause Hydrating Cleanser fits the bill perfectly! This award-winning creamy cleanser (thank you O Magazine) was especially developed for women 40+ to deeply cleanse and nourish “more experienced” skin (we’re not aging, we’re just gaining experience), leaving it looking balanced, brightened and firm, while also diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  This cleanser is gentle enough to be used twice daily and, thanks to its flip top tube, can be kept in the shower or near the sink for an easy application experience.

  3. Invest in a Kickass Moisturizer:  Another great way to keep your skin healthy in the winter is to moisturize daily, and ideally twice daily.  A great moisturizer is worth a bit of splurge to ensure you’re getting a product with powerhouse ingredients, preferably formulated to meet the skin requirements of your current life stage.  At Pause, we know that hormone deprived skin is prone to excessive dryness and so we formulate specifically for this with ingredients like the avocado oil, glycerin, niacinamide and powerhouse peptides found in our  Collagen Boosting Moisturizer that will keep you feeling fully hydrated through the entire day and can be applied in the evening as well for 24-hour coverage.  Applying moisturizer immediately out of the shower - while your skin is still a bit damp - will help to lock in moisture and keep your skin from becoming dry and irritated.

  4. Layering Isn’t Just For Clothes:  Moisture evaporates, even in your skin, so layering skincare products in the winter can really help boost skin’s moisture level, as well as keep hydration locked in longer.  Whether you are only a bit dry or as dry as the Mojave desert, we have a solution for you.  If your skin tends to be less dry, and you’re looking to tone and tighten a few areas (like around the jawline as an example), try our  Complete Face Serum first followed by the Collagen Boosting Moisturizer.  When layering, you always want to start with the lightest texture and then apply heavier textured products on top.  Pro Tip: Beware of mixing different product brands. Be sure to check ingredient lists and make sure that ingredients in each product don’t cancel each other out or potentially cause irritation.  A great example is combining retinol with AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) which cancause excessive skin sensitivity, irritation, and redness.

For very dry skin, our  Moisture Lock Ultra Hydrator is an all over hydrating powerhouse that instantly boosts and locks in moisture thanks to ingredients such as polyglutamic acid (think hyaluronic acid on steroids) and ceramides (hello skin barrier defense).  Not only can this intense moisturizer be layered on top of the collagen boosting moisturizer, but it can also be used anywhere on the body that needs a lot of hydration – hands, feet, heels, elbows, you name it. It’s super gentle and may be used by those with even the most sensitive skin for immediate, soothing relief.

  5. Massage: Like we needed another reason to love massage! Massaging the skin with your fingertips or a tool like the Pause  Fascia Stimulating Tool helps improve blood flow/microcirculation and lymphatic drainage, but also warms the skin and energizes skin tissue, increasing product absorption and penetration. Increasing product penetration to deeper levels of the skin is what will ensure the greatest levels of hydration. This is your secret weapon.
